The Reel Life: Fajita to the face edition

5 March 2015

In 2010, New Jersey man Hiram Jimenez visited an Applebee's and ordered the steak fajitas. Say what you want about his choice of restaurant, but that's a quality order right there. Then everything went downhill.

Jimenez and his brother decided to bow their heads in prayer for their food once it arrived at the table. With his face close to the sizzling skillet, Jimenez then heard a loud sizzling noise followed by a grease pop, and then felt a burn in his eye. He panicked, knocked the skillet in his lap, and that, of course, caused more burns.

Jimenez decided to sue Applebee's but was denied by both a lower court and again on appeal. Both courts found that the danger posed by the skillet of fajitas was "open and obvious." That is to say, if you weren't going to be immediately burned by the fajitas in the restaurant, they'd find a way to come back to get you later on your drive home.

Now, Jimenez has spent probably thousands on legal fees, and he didn't even get to eat his fajitas on that fateful day in 2010. If there's one lesson to be learned from this ordeal, it's this: Never eat at Applebee's.
